WEAVING DIGITAL AND REALITY IN GENERATIVE ART
- November 22, 2024 by ArtiAI MAGAZINE
Marta Pang, a Berlin-based multimedia art ist originally from Hong Kong, is redefining the boundaries of generative art by merging the virtual with the tangible. Specializing in interac tive audio-visual performances, Marta brings abstract forms to life, exploring the movements of energy, light, and sound. Her immersive creations, showcased at global events like Coachella and the Post Malone Tour, invite audiences to experience the unseen forces that shape our world.
With a background in creative technology, Marta uses tools like TouchDesigner to craft dy namic visual landscapes, where algorithms and human intuition collide in mesmerizing harmony. Marta’s artistic journey began with a daily challenge to produce generative visuals, propelling her into the world of new media art. Her work, a fusion of abstract topographies and reactive visual elements, captures the fleeting and in tangible—turning invisible energies into vibrant, evolving forms. Through this innovative blend of technology and creativity, Marta invites view ers to witness the delicate interplay between the digital and the physical, offering a glimpse into a world where art transcends the screen and be comes an immersive experience.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE IN GENERATIVE ART?
My work merges abstract forms with the movements of energy elements that are not typically observable in everyday life. I enjoy exploring the visualization of intangible elements like energy and light through generative processes. My pieces often resemble abstract topographies, where visuals evolve and transform in response to the frequencies of sound.
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR REACTIVE VISUAL PIECES?
My inspiration often comes from completely unrelated or unexpected places. While I admire other generative artwork, I am careful not to be overly exposed to it as it might subconsciously influence my creative process. Much of my in spiration comes from simple things in daily life— meditation, random thoughts, nature, cities, or the energy from human interactions. Some of these influences are quite abstract, which might explain why there are so many abstract visuals in my work. The way sound interacts with visuals is mostly part of my ongoing exploration in the audio-visual field. I rely heavily on my intuition 78 and keep exploring until I reach that ‘click moment’ where sound and visuals come together perfectly. This approach ties into mindfulness and being aware of the subtle things around us.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE TECHNICAL MASTERY AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION IN YOUR GENERATIVE ART? DO YOU VIEW AI TECHNOLOGY AS A COLLABORATOR OR A TOOL?
For me, a tool is something that does exactly what it’s designed to do, giving predictable re sults. However, I see technology and AI as both collaborators and tools. On one hand, I can use them with precise control to execute my artistic vision, ensuring the outcome aligns with what I have in mind. On the other hand, I love letting go of control at times, allowing algorithms to behave unpredictably and surprise me with something new. This balance between control and unpre dictability is what keeps my creative process exciting.
HOW HAS YOUR CULTURAL BACKGROUND INFLUENCED YOUR CREATIVE WORK?
Growing up in Hong Kong has definitely shaped my understanding of urban energy and aesthet ics. Hong Kong’s fast-paced and dense environ ment had a major impact on my early life. Moving to Berlin was a huge cultural shift, and adapting to a different pace of life led to a journey of self exploration, helping me reflect on my identity and cultural roots. Living between two distinct cultures made me more aware of different ways to perceive the world. While it hasn’t significant ly influenced the aesthetic style of my work, it has certainly impacted my creative process. My works are often the outcome of my exploration and experimentation within TouchDesigner.
