REDEFINING NATURE WITH DIGITAL BOTANICAL ART
- November 22, 2024  by  ArtiAI MAGAZINE

Hannes Hummel, a Cologne-based interdisciplinary artist, is known for his ability to blend the organic and digital worlds through innovative techniques. With a background in Integrated Design and over a decade of experience in the creative industry, Hannes has worked with top luxury and tech brands before fully transitioning into the realm of digital art. His work explores the intersection of nature and technology, using CGI, 3D modeling, and AI to create immersive visual experiences that reimagine the natural world.

Hannes’ award-winning series, “Living Still Lifes,” reinterprets historical art movements through a digital lens, combining hyper-realistic botanical forms with modern technology. His latest project, “Hybrid Species,” pushes the boundaries of digital botanical artistry, blending real-world species with imaginative elements to create hybrid flowers that feel both familiar and otherworldly. Hannes’ process, which involves AI-generated compositions, 3D scanning, and manual refinement, results in captivating works that challenge viewers to reconsider their relationship with nature.

With each new project, Hannes continues to push the limits of what’s possible in digital art. His work blurs the line between the tangible and the imaginary, offering viewers a glimpse into the future of art where human creativity and machine precision harmoniously coexist. As AI continues to reshape the art world, Hannes stands at the forefront, redefining how we perceive and interact with the natural world through digital artistry.

HOW HAS YOUR PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY INFLUENCED YOUR TRANSITION INTO DIGITAL ART?
Before fully committing to digital art, I had an extensive career working with tech and luxury brands, which helped shape my visual design skills. This background allowed me to experiment freely with new mediums like AI, VR, and 3D modeling, making the transition to digital art a natural progression. The rise of Web3 and the NFT space gave me the opportunity to explore new artistic directions, focusing on the intersection of nature and digital aesthetics.

“IT PUSHES THE LIMITS OF TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES AND PROVIDES UNPRECEDENTED WAYS TO EXPERIMENT WITH FORM, COLOR, AND COMPOSITION.”

HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE? WHAT ARE SOME TECHNIQUES YOU USE IN YOUR WORK?

My artistic style can be described as a fusion of organic and digital elements, where I explore the intersection between nature and technology. I am fascinated by the interplay of realism and ab straction, using hyper-realistic visuals to reinter pret botanical forms and challenge the viewer’s perception of the natural world. My process in volves a mix of traditional art principles and mod ern digital techniques. I often start with a rough concept inspired by nature and develop it step by-step using AI tools, 3D modeling, and custom algorithms. By merging digital techniques with elements of classical art, I create a unique visual language that bridges the gap between the real and the imagined.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR LATEST PROJECT - “HYBRID SPECIES”, AND WHAT TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE?

Hybrid Species is a continuation of my explo ration of digital flora and marks my first art se ries where AI played a central role in pushing the boundaries of digital botanical artistry. The project consists of 80 intricately crafted floral de signs that blend real-world species with imagi native elements to create hybrids that feel both familiar and otherworldly. My inspiration comes from a variety of sources, including historical botanical illustrations, cul tural interpretations of floral symbolism, and the mathematical principles that govern natu ral forms. For this series, I divided my creative process into three main stages. First, I used AI to generate rough compositions using a diverse dataset that included images from my own flower photographs, 3D-scanned data, and even renders from my custom-trained flower model. These compositions served as the foundation upon which the hybrid designs were built.

The second stage involved using AI to combine and merge various botanical elements, leading to unexpected yet cohesive outcomes. I find this part of the process the most fascinating as it al lows me to collaborate with the AI in real-time, creating hybrids that defy traditional boundaries. Finally, I manually refined these raw designs, enhancing details and correcting errors. I then imported them into Cinema 4D, where I applied real-life photographic techniques such as depth of field, bloom, and grain to achieve a timeless, ethereal quality. The result is a series of digital artworks that blur the line between reality and imagination, inviting viewers to rethink their per ception of nature.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FUTURE IMPACT OF AI ON THE ART WORLD?
AI technology is continuously advancing, expanding the boundaries of creativity, and offering artists new tools and mediums for expression. It pushes the limits of traditional techniques and provides unprecedented ways to experiment with form, color, and composition. These tools can generate complex designs, assist in refining concepts, and even act as collaborators, extend ing artistic potential beyond human limitations. However, the rise of AI also presents challenges. Questions of authorship and originality be come more complex as AI blurs the line between human creation and machine-generated output. Concerns about the commodification of art may arise, with some fearing that mass-produced AI-generated pieces could devalue traditional handcrafted work. Yet, this very tension may spark new artistic movements where human ingenuity and machine capabilities coalesce to create hybrid forms of art.
