BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN THE REAL AND THE UNREAL
- November 22, 2024  by  ArtiAI MAGAZINE

Anthony Tournadre, known as INFRAROUGE, is a French visual artist who transforms everyday scenes into dystopian narratives through a striking blend of photography, AI, and post photographic brutalism. After breaking free from the constraints of the advertising world, he embraced a new path of artistic freedom, creating works that are as unsettling as they are captivating. His unique style challenges the viewer to question the boundaries between beauty and discomfort, where the familiar becomes alien through his distorted lens. Deeply inspired by 90s aesthetics and surrealism, INFRAROUGE’s art merges the organic with the artificial, creating visuals that feel raw yet deliberate. His AI-generated imagery deconstructs reality, allowing moments of controlled chaos to take over. With each new piece, INFRAROUGE plays with textures, contrasts, and human forms to evoke visceral emotional responses from his audience.

INFRAROUGE continues to push the limits of AI as a creative partner, exploring the darker, more complex sides of human experience. Through his dystopian landscapes and surreal narratives, he redefines how technology and art can intersect, offering viewers a glimpse into a world where discomfort and beauty coexist in perfect tension.

COULD YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR TRANSITION FROM THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY TO THE WORLD OF DIGITAL AND AI ART? WHAT TRIGGERED THIS CHANGE?

After nearly 10 years in the fast-paced advertising world in Paris, I ended up in a toxic environment that drained my health and creativity, so I knew it was time for a change. I felt the need to channel my energy and rediscover my love for imagery. This journey led me to create Infrarouge, a reflection of my quest for creative freedom and a passion for blending art and emotion. Now, I’m on a self-expression journey, embracing endless possibilities and redefining what it means to create!

“THIS TECHNOLOGY ISN’T ABOUT REPLACEMENT; IT’S ABOUT ENHANCEMENT, REVEALING LAYERS OF OUR HUMANITY IN STRIKING, UNEXPECTED WAYS.”

WHAT ARE YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? WHEN CREATING WITH GENERATIVE AI, HOW DOES YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS UNFOLD?

My creative process is deeply inspired by everyday life, vivid memories, and the surrealness of dreams. I draw heavily from 90s aesthetics, an era that felt bold and unrestrained, with a raw energy that speaks to my work. Films like Mars Attacks! and The Fifth Element feed my obses sion with strangeness, posthumanism, and futuristic tech. Music plays an essential role—it’s more than just a soundtrack, it’s a source of creative fuel. When I create with generative AI, I often enter a flow state where the boundaries between myself, the AI, and the music dissolve, allowing ideas to emerge organically. My process is iterative, much like peeling layers from an onion, starting with an initial concept and gradually exploring deeper layers of meaning and emotion. I also incorporate personal images into my work, adding an intimate, human touch.

HOW DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS IN YOUR WORK? ARE THERE ANY PIECES THAT HOLD PARTICULAR PERSONAL SIGNIFICANCE FOR YOU?

I express my emotions through scenes that feel both familiar and surreal, often set in transitional moments like twilight or dawn—times that naturally make you reflect. I love to play with textures, contrasts, and human forms to create that deep, visceral connection with the viewer. I often use warm, solar hues, which have become central to my visuals. Pairing my artwork with music on Instagram enhances the emotional resonance, adding another layer to the experience.

WHAT ROLE DOES AI PLAY IN YOUR WORK? HOW HAS AI CHANGED THE WAY YOU APPROACH ART CREATION AND EXPRESSION? WHAT IMPACT HAS IT HAD ON YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS

AI has completely revolutionized my artistic journey. It’s not just a tool; it’s a dynamic partner that challenges my perspective. With platforms like MidJourney or Runway, I explore complexities that expand my imagination. AI gives me the freedom to create, experiment, and surprise my self in ways I never dreamed possible. I’ve let go of the need to control every detail, allowing my creativity to flourish. For me, INFRAROUGE is a therapeutic journey balancing control and discovery while embracing vulnerability. Instead of dictating beauty, AI reveals fresh narratives and emotions, crafting art that resonates deeply. Ultimately, I’ve learned that true artistry isn’t just about creating—it’s about having the guts to embrace the unknown. Letting go has opened unexpected avenues in my art, showing me the beauty that comes from unpredictability.
